Tōkaidō Shinkansen
The world’s first High-Speed Railway, the Tōkaidō Shinkansen, celebrates it’s 55th anniversary of operation later this year, and in April, the 60th anniversary since construction commenced in earnest to complete the route from Tōkyō to Shin-Ōsaka. After 5 years construction, opening for service in October 1964 in advance of the first Tōkyō Olympic Games. JRS member Des West has shared a selection of shots from his visit to Japan during the 50th anniversary period in 2014.

JR West owned N700 set N1 roared through Odawara on an eastbound service to Tōkyō
700 Series set C18 also sped through Odawara heading westbound on the 1st October 2014. The 700 series are presently in the process of withdrawal and demotion to slower stopping services over the Tōkaido-Sanyō Shinkansen route, with the faster ‘Nozomi’ services handled by the newer 700 series derivatives.
