The Ikoma Cable Car — Japan’s Oldest Commercial Funicular

Opened in 1918, the Ikoma Cable Car is Japan’s oldest commercial funicular railway still in operation. The line connects Kintetsu Ikoma Station with Hozanji Temple and continues to the summit of Mount Ikoma, serving both local residents and generations of visitors.

What makes the Ikoma Cable Car particularly distinctive is its blend of history and imagination. Alongside historic rolling stock, several newer cars feature playful animal and confectionery-inspired designs, creating a unique atmosphere that appeals to passengers of all ages while preserving the line’s unique character.

The following photographs illustrate the remarkable variety found on one of Japan’s most beloved mountain railways.
